Sharing Our Stories To Make a Difference: Resiliency, Engagement and Access To Education

June 22, 2008

What Are These Workshops?

Throughout 2007 and 2008 the National Youth in Care Network will be coordinating workshops for youth in care in communities across Ontario. The goals of these workshops are to train youth in care to reclaim their story and engage in emotional healing through creative exploration, community education, public speaking and by accessing social support. After initial training workshops with the youth in care, they will be supported and encouraged to organize and conduct their own professional training and community education workshops.

The focus of these workshops will be on supporting and improving youth in care access to post secondary education.

The stories that will be developed during these workshops will be included in an anthology of stories from across Canada.

Why Are We Facilitating These Workshops?

Storytelling is one of the most powerful and effective communication tools we have. When youth in care reclaim their stories, we have the opportunity to not only take back control over our lives, but also change others and make a difference. And when we share our stories with caregiving professionals and other interveners, we are sharing with them a real chance to experience what we experience, and to own up to their own responsibility to improving the system.

Benefits to Youth & Agencies

The National Youth in Care Network will provide the coordination and facilitation services for workshops in your community, and will also provide an honorarium for each youth participant.

Through the workshops, youth leadership skills will be enhanced, and agencies and communities will gain a corps of young people from the care system who are trained, skilled, and effective public speakers and organizational administrators.
