International Foster Care Organisation Conference 2009
July 17, 2009
July 12 - 17, the National Youth In Care Network attended the International Foster Care Organizations' world conference held in Dublin, Ireland! 36 countries were represented by over 600 delegates. 100 of these participants were children and youth in and from care, and birth children of foster carer's.
Our goal at this conference was to learn about what other countries are doing to promote meaningful engagement opportunities to young people in their care, and to promote our work and the voices of our members on an international level.
To begin the week we presented a plenary session to youth and service providers about the benefits of teaching young people to claim and share their story in healthy and strategic ways. We also facilitated a multi-media story telling session for youth ages 16 - 24. Through their participation they helped us to create a story about the benefits of fostering. These young people chose to use this opportunity as a way to share positive messages about their caregivers, and to thank those who have stood by them.
Also that week, we were very pleased to attend the IFCO Annual General Meeting where our very own Nicole Herbert (NYICN Board Member) was elected Secretary of the new IFCO Board of Directors! Well done, Nicole!!!
The NYICN would like to congratulate and thank the Irish Foster Care Association (IFCA) and the International Foster Care Organization (IFCO) for an excellent and memorable conference!
